Obituary for Frank Lee Shoppe

Frank Lee Shoppe, 85, of Carrollton, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 16, 2017.
Frank was a kind Southern gentleman with a warm, quick smile who loved his faith and church, his family and his community. Known as Dandie to his six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, Frank lived his life generously and treasured time spent with his family and friends. His social calendar, detailed meticulously in a pocket-sized calendar that he always kept handy for quick reference, was full of appointments for family events, church and volunteer activities, and time with friends.
An avid sports fan, Frank enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves, the Carrollton Trojans, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies, for whom his youngest grandson, Brady, was a catcher. A treasured gift last Christmas was a brick in his honor for the new Braves Stadium.
Frank was a gifted singer who generously shared his musical talents as a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church Adult and PraiSingers choirs and as a frequent visitor to local nursing homes where he sang, provided devotionals and entertained residents. Music ministry was important throughout his life and he served five churches in Metro Atlanta over 39 years as Minister of Music in addition to fulltime employment.
Always punctual and a creature of habit, Frank could usually be found at lunch at Courthouse Café, and Billy Bob’s, usually with his devoted daughter Celia, and was on a first name basis with all the regulars.
Frank was born in Atlanta on September 17, 1931, and graduated from Murphy High School as Class Valedictorian in 1949. He graduated from Atlanta Division University of Georgia, now Georgia State University, in 1955 with a BBA degree, majoring in insurance and real estate, attending classes in the evenings and working fulltime.
Frank spent his entire working career of almost 40 years in the property and casualty insurance business, first with Lipscomb-Ellis Company and then Johnson & Higgins of Georgia, retiring in 1995.
On April 22, 1951, he married Jean Moore in Atlanta, where they went on to raise their two children: Celia and Jeff. In 2003, Mr. and Mrs. Shoppe relocated to Carrollton, Ga., where their daughter Celia and her family already lived, and became active members of the community, attending Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was recognized with the Key to the City in honor of his community activities and volunteer support which also included Open Hands Ministry.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife Jean in 2015; his parents, Albert L. Shoppe and Grace Shoppe Freeman; and his sister, Grace Elizabeth (Betsy) Doonan.
He is survived by daughter, Celia Jean Shoppe Ledbetter (Brett), Carrollton; son, Jeff Shoppe (Kathy), Flowery Branch; six grandchildren: Kerri Ledbetter Felder (Joe), Hogansville; Joel Ledbetter ( Kate), Rome; Linsey Shoppe Matthews (Jeremy), Flowery Branch; Stevie Shoppe Lett ( Josh), Flowery Branch; Mindy Shoppe, Flowery Branch, and Brady Shoppe, Flowery Branch; three great grandchildren: Annabelle Lett, Brooks Lett and Owen Ledbetter.
Visitation will be at the Tabernacle Baptist Church Worship Center on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, from 2-3:45 pm, followed by funeral services at 4 pm. Dr. Jimmy Gentry and Dr. Stephen Allen will officiate. Music will be provided by Rev. Mark Barnes. Pallbearers will be: Joel Ledbetter, Brady Shoppe, Jeremy Matthews, Joe Felder, Jr., Josh Lett and Douglas Moore. Burial will follow at Carroll Memory Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be the PraiSingers and Ed Bailey’s Sunday School Class.
