Obituary for Videria Jackson Gray

Videria Jackson Gray of Carrollton passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017 following an extended illness. She was born in the Carroll County community of Tyus, on April 23, 1927, to Dan and Lola Jackson. Videria met the love of her life, Lester, at Temple High School in December, 1942. They married on June 26, 1943, but were soon separated by Lester’s call to duty during WWII. Videria patiently awaited his return by perfecting her cooking skills, and was reading through a cookbook on the back steps of her parents’ home on the day of Lester’s surprise return from overseas. They soon started a family, and Videria spent several years working for the Arrow Shirt Company and the Singer Sewing Machine Company, respectively. During her years at Singer, Videria spent the summer months teaching sewing lessons to young teen girls, and spent many years making her own and her daughters’ clothing. In 1966 Videria resigned her job at Singer to become the bookkeeper for her husband’s dairy business on River Valley Farm, located on Old Muse Road, where they lived for over 50 years. Lester and Videria were married for 74 years, and with the exception of the two years he served in the Army Medical Corps during WWII, she was his constant companion. They traveled extensively throughout the U.S., and following Lester’s retirement, they traveled to Germany to visit the areas where he served during the war. It had been a lifelong dream of Lester’s to share that with her. They also spent many years serving their church and community, and are members of Shady Grove Baptist Church. Videria is survived by her husband, Lester Gray; three children: Melba Daniels of Carrollton, Roger Gray (Elaine) of Loganville, and Carol Lee of McDonough; seven grandchildren: Brett Daniels (Kate) of Woodstock, Brian Daniels (and fiancée, Jennifer Weems) of Cumming, Daniel Gray of Atlanta, Taylor Gray of Woodstock, Cara Lee Funte (Josh) of McDonough, Christian Lee of Cleveland, and Lora Lee of McDonough; six great grandchildren: Lilly Daniels and Aaron Daniels of Woodstock, Grayson Funte and Nolan Funte of McDonough, and Brayden Weems and Parker Weems of Cumming; siblings: Searcy Jackson (Nell) of Newnan, Ivee McGukin (Gene) of Bremen, and, Marie Ragsdale of Carrollton; and, a large number of nieces and nephews. Videria is preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Lola Jackson; and siblings, Nathaniel Jackson, Archie Jackson, Stewart Jackson, Peggy Leopard, and D.A. Jackson. Visitation with the family will be held at Martin and Hightower Heritage Chapel on Saturday, December 2, 2017 between 2:00 p.m and 4:00 p.m. The funeral will be at Shady Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Mike Harris officiating. Mrs. Gray will be placed in the church on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Gray’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers and the Jackson family nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions are respectfully requested to be made to Alzheimer’s Association Georgia, 41 Perimeter Center, E #550, Atlanta, Georgia 30346. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.martin-hightower.com. Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel of Carrollton has charge of the arrangements.
