Life Legacy


Mrs. Ruth Augusta McConatha Pope, age 84, a resident of Haralson Nursing & Rehab, formerly of Cottage Landing, Carrollton, as well as Ashville, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010. She was born April 16, 1925 in Manchester, Alabama the daughter of the late Lawrence Arthur McConatha, Sr., and Edna Wates McConatha. Ruth was educated in various schools of Alabama since her father was a Methodist minister. She attended Ashville High School until November 1942 when her father was transferred from Steele to Ohatchee. In 1943 she graduated from Ohatchee High School. Her plans to become a school teacher were continued when she was accepted as a student at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL., in September 1943. She married Louis Bert Pope, May 17, 1946 at Jacksonville United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Alabama. In August 1946, Ruth received her B.S. Degree from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL. She accepted the position as teacher of Business Subjects and English at Ashville High School. She also served as Sponsor of the Beta Club and yearbook. She continued teaching for 42 years until she retired in 1986. She was honored to be an active member of the Beta Pi Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma International Society. Ruth and Louis Bert were active members of the Ashville United Methodist Church where she played the piano and they both participated in the church choir. While there they both faithfully served in many capacities in the church, where they especially enjoyed working with the youth. After her husband of 41 years passed away she moved to Carrollton where she participated in the Red Hat Club and the Book Club at Cottage Landing. She also transferred her church membership to Carrollton First United Methodist Church. Besides her parents, Mrs. Pope was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Bert Pope; and sisters, Gloria Jean Martin and Anita Ellette McConatha. Ruth touched so many lives through her teaching and strong Christian faith. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who knew and loved her. Survivors include her brother and sister in law, Lawrence Arthur McConatha, Jr., (Mary) of Cullman, AL.; nieces, Jane Martin Taylor (Brad) and Judy Martin Duke (Kenny) all of Carrollton; nephew, Michael Lawrence McConatha (Theresa) of Cullman, AL.; great nieces and nephews, Kristi, Kimberly, Jonathan, Andrew, Katy and Will Taylor, and Jennifer Sharp, David, Adrienne & Chris Duke and Ashley Jones (Dennis); great, great niece and nephew, Brianna Duke and Isaiah Jones. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11 AM from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Rev. Eddie Herring, Dr. Dean Milford and Rev. Karla Otroszko officiating. Nephews and great nephews will serve as pallbearers. A graveside service will follow at 3 PM CST., in Rainbow Memorial Gardens, Gadsden, AL with Mr. Lawrence Arthur McConatha, Jr., officiating.
