Obituary for Virginia Cumbie Jackson

Virginia Ellen Cumbie Jackson of Carrollton, passed away on October 23, 2018 at the age of 98.
She was born April 18, 1920, the second daughter of Bruce and Clora Cumbie of Tyus, Bowdon, and later Carrollton. She was a lifelong resident of Carroll County, a graduate of Bowdon High School, and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for 77 years.
She married Singleton Jackson of Carrollton in 1947 and worked with him in their business, Jackson’s Hardware in Carrollton from 1956 until 1996. She loved her church and taught 4-year- olds in Sunday School for many years.
As a young woman, she worked in her father’s business, Bruce Cumbie Stores, and in later years, after her marriage, was co-owner with her husband, Singleton, of Jackson’s Hardware on Bradley Street for many years. Virginia and Singleton were pleased to move to the new Jackson’s Hardware on Bankhead Highway, built by their son Tom in 1984, continuing the third generation of the family business. Virginia and Singleton enjoyed working in the store, seeing their customers and friends for another twelve years, until their retirement at ages 76 and 86 respectively.
Her work with Jackson’s Hardware spanned forty years. During that time she met many Carrollton and Carroll County customers and friends. She took a personal interest in her customers, learning their names and enjoying meeting their family members when they came to the store. She rarely missed a day of work for many years, personally welcoming and greeting all who entered the business.
She is predeceased by her parents, Clora Mae Mosley Cumbie and William Bruce Cumbie; and her husband, Singleton Jackson, to whom she was married for 61 years until his death in 2009. In addition, she is predeceased by twin infant grandchildren, Austin Singleton Jackson and Erin Senkbeil Jackson; and her sisters and their spouses, Bertha Rainwater (Bill), Martha Adams Norman Burrell(Lloyd),(Homer),(Judson); Mary Jo Crawford(Willis), and Joyce Morrow(Milford).

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Dr. Judy Jackson; daughter, Mary Clo Jackson; grandson and his wife, Avery and Becky Jackson, all of Carrollton; and granddaughter, Hayley Jackson, of Atlanta. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren.
She was a long-time subscriber and avid reader of the Times-Georgian, The Star News, and The Atlanta Journal, sharing her copies in later life with other residents in her assisted living. She enjoyed reading the church news from across the county through local church columns, which helped her keep up with friends and customers from the various communities.
She also enjoyed sending cards and notes to friends, family, and church members on their birthdays, get well wishes, and special occasions, which she continued into her nineties. She was known for her many thank you notes sent to friends and neighbors for their visits and kindnesses.
Virginia was an excellent cook, preparing Sunday meals for her family for many years. She gladly shared her recipes and enjoyed the recipes of others in the community, sharing those, as well. Her children and grandchildren remember many family meals at Papa Jack and Mama Gin’s home on North Lakeshore. They also opened their backyard on Lake Carroll to friends and family each 4th of July to view the fireworks.
Her life was filled with a positive outlook, care and concern for others, and love of family and friends throughout Carroll County and beyond.
Her decision was made years ago to donate her body to Emory University School of Medicine on her death. A memorial service to honor her life will be held on Tuesday, October 30 at 11:00am at the Tabernacle Baptist Church Chapel in Carrollton with Dr. Stephen Allen officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 29 from 5-8 at Martin-Hightower Heritage Chapel. The family will also receive friends in the Church Parlor one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 150 Tabernacle Drive, Carrollton, GA 30117.
Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.martin-hightower.com. Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel has charge of the arrangements.
