Obituary for W. S. Harman

W.S. Harman was born in Carroll County August 14, 1934 and was raised on a farm in the Farmers High community. He passed away on Thursday evening May 31, 2018. He was the son of the late William S. Harman and Louise Burson Harman. Mr. Harman was a 1952 graduate of Bowdon High School and then enrolled at the University of Georgia. After earning a degree from the University of Georgia in Vocational Agriculture, Mr. Harman embarked on a 35-year career in education. His first position was as a vocational agriculture teacher in Plains, Georgia, where Jimmy Carter was on the local board of trustees. In 1964, Mr. Harman returned to Carroll County as the Central High School vocational agriculture teacher, a position he held for nine years before becoming principal of Central Primary. He then became assistant superintendent of Carroll County Schools. As assistant superintendent, Mr. Harman oversaw Human Resources, Construction, Curriculum and Maintenance Operations. His greatest passion was always vocational education. Mr. Harman was a driving force in the development and construction of the vocational high school and Carroll County’s agriculture education center.
Faith played an important role in Mr. Harman’s life and he was a long time member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He served in a number of leadership positions at Tabernacle including Chairman of the Deacon Board and he later was named Deacon Emeritus.
He served his community for over twenty years on the boards of both Carroll EMC and the Association for Remarkable Citizens (ARC). W.S. was a member of the Central High School Athletic Booster club for over 25 years.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Susan Strickland Harman and his brother, Harold Harman. His surviving family includes his children: Chuck Harman (Dana); Cherri LeBlanc (Jimmy), and a sister, Becky Hartley all of Carrollton. Grandchildren include Madison Magalhaes (Lucas), Sydney LeBlanc, Davis LeBlanc, John Harman, and Mattox Harman.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon June 3, at 4:00PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church with Dr. Stephen Allen and Rev. Tommy Greer officiating. Pallbearers will be John Harman, Mattox Harman, Davis LeBlanc, Ben Harman, Joe Johnson, Lucas Magalhaes, and Jason Hartley. Honorary escort will be comprised of directors and employees of Carroll EMC, deacons of Tabernacle Baptist Church and members of the Gary Bulloch Sunday School class. Interment will follow in Carroll Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, June 2 from 1:00PM until 3:00PM and from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. They will also receive friends at the church on Sunday from 3:30 until the hour of service. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.martin-hightower.com.
